Hydrocephalus in neurocysticercosis

Abstract: Humans with CC are incidental intermediate hosts, which replace the pig in the life cycle of the T. solium. Children are more frequently affected by parenchyma infestation of cysticercus, of which the main clinical manifestation is epilepsy. Hydrocephalus is more common in adults and is caused by cerebrospinal fluid blockage by ventricular cysts and inflammatory reactions (ependimitis/arachnoiditis). Treatment should be individualized based on clinical presentation, degree of infestation, location and viabilit… Show more

“…All these complications are severe, require reoperation, and may cause death 2,3,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] . Currently, there is a consensus that, whenever possible and indicated, one should avoid VS implantation when a high complication rate is identified in the long-term (mean of 60 months) of up to 51% of cases; in these cases, ventricular neuroendoscopic procedures are given preference 12,[14][15][16][17] . To prevent infectious complications, the institutional adoption of protocols, such as first described by Choux, is what shows the most positive impact and control of these complications.…”

“…The induced inflammatory process and death of the parasites cause basal arachnoiditis, which perturbs the free circulation of CSF and caused these two types of symptoms [10]. Symptoms of raised intracranial pressure were among the initial findings in 58.3% of our patients; however, 75% had experienced these symptoms by the end of the follow-up period.…”

“…Usualmente, la neurocisticercosis racemosa (sic) es de mal pronóstico, pero cuando se asocia a hidrocefalia, ependimitis o aracnoiditis, infección de la derivación ventrículo-peritoneal o desnutrición, la mortalidad aumenta por encima del 50 % de los casos al cabo de dos años (27,28).…”
