Hydrodynamic drag reduction of shear-thinning liquids in superhydrophobic textured microchannels

Abstract: Super-hydrophobic textured surfaces reduce hydrodynamic drag in pressure-driven laminar flows in micro-channels. However, despite the wide usage of non-Newtonian liquids in microfluidic devices, the flow behaviour of such liquids was rarely examined so far in the context of friction reduction in textured super-hydrophobic micro-channels. Thus, we have investigated the influence of topologically different rough surfaces on friction reduction of shear-thinning liquids in micro-channels. First, the friction facto… Show more

“…The concentration of Xanthan gum in the aqueous solution was 2 g/L, while the preparation procedure and the shear viscosity properties of this liquid were analytically described in our previous study. 45 Finally, it should be stated that the average CA, CAH, and CSA values reported in this study were calculated based on five repeated measurements taken at different locations on each sample.…”

“…Thereafter, CSA of other liquids such as Xanthan gum solution and pH liquids was investigated to simulate the response of LIS against viscous fluid substances, e.g., mucus, body fluids, and gastric fluids with different pH levels. The concentration of Xanthan gum in the aqueous solution was 2 g/L, while the preparation procedure and the shear viscosity properties of this liquid were analytically described in our previous study . Finally, it should be stated that the average CA, CAH, and CSA values reported in this study were calculated based on five repeated measurements taken at different locations on each sample.…”

“…2017; Patlazhan & Vagner 2017; Gaddam et al. 2021). Previous studies have mainly considered, analytically, numerically and experimentally, Newtonian flows with SH groovy and CP wall surfaces, for both thick and thin channels (Ou & Rothstein 2005; Qian et al.…”

“…T. P. Manoj et al 22 fabricated a superhydrophobic surface by changing the etching time of titanium alloy in acid, the coating exhibits a maximum WCA of 162.3° ± 1° with a sliding angle of 1°. A. Gaddam et al 23 studied one step femtosecond laser processing to get single-tier nano and two-tier multiscale structure to learn more about the surface morphology and surface hydrophobicity, and the experimental results show that the multi-scale surface morphology features have good hydrophobicity. However, most of these methods require fine technology and damage of surface metal characteristics that cannot achieve large-scale production.…”
