Hydrogel surfaces are biomimics for sensing and mobility systems in the body such as the eyes and large joints due to their important characteristics of flexibility, permeability, and integrated aqueous component. Recent studies have shown polymer concentration gradients resulting in a less dense region in the top micrometers of the surface. Under shear, this gradient is hypothesized to drive lubrication behavior due to its rheological similarity to a semi-dilute polymer solution. In this work we map 3 distinct lubricating regimes between a polyacrylamide surface and an aluminum annulus using stepped-velocity tribo-rheometry over 5 decades of sliding speed in increasing and decreasing steps. These regimes, characterized by weakly or strongly time-dependent response and thixotropy-like hysteresis, provide the skeleton of a lubrication curve for hydrogel-against-hard material interfaces and support hypotheses of polymer mechanics-driven lubrication. Tribo-rheometry is particularly suited to uncover the lubrication mechanisms of complex interfaces such as are formed with hydrated hydrogel surfaces and biological surfaces.

The present work was aimed to study the friction and wear behaviour of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) under extreme pressure conditions as an anti-weld additive for neem oil. The effect of neem oil, blended with various loading of GNPs on the friction and wear characteristics has been investigated. From the experimental results, it was found that 1 wt.% of GNPs in neem oil showed the least coefficient of friction and smoother wear scar diameter. The extreme pressure test was performed on neem oil with and without GNPs as per ASTM standards. The extreme pressure test results indicated the improvement in seizure load of neem oil by 27.8% at 0.5 wt.% of GNPs as compared to pure neem oil. Optical microscopy of worn steel ball surface revealed the pit formation and the formation of wedge cutting edge in GNPs modified neem oil.

Purpose Formulation of mineral-based specialty lubricants without anti-wear (AW) and extreme-pressure (EP) additives is a challenging task. This study aims to propose an environment friendly alternative to mineral-based lubricants with superior wear preventive characteristics. Design/methodology/approach In this study, analysis of wear under trimethylolpropane trioleate (TMPTO)-based lube using operating parameters of four-ball tester was done. The effects of type of lube oil, temperature, load and speed on specific wear rate were investigated using Taguchi L27 orthogonal array. Based on the Taguchi experimental results and single-to-noise ratios, ranking of the four ball parameters was done. The surface analysis of worn steel balls was carried out using optical microscopic images of wear scar and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Findings Results depict that the blend of sulfurized additives with TMPTO base oil showed a synergistic effect in terms of reduction in specific wear rate by the formation of protective film layer on the surface. The possible physical or chemical interactions between base oil and additives were studied based on the surface morphology of test balls. Practical implications The formulated lubricant has the potential to be used as a tapping/broaching oil. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the paper is a novel study investigating the effect of different additive in TMPTO. The results could prove beneficial in making TMPTO-based lube oil a viable replacement of mineral-based oils.
