Hydrodynamics in a RDC Extractor: Single and Two-Phase PIV Measurements and CFD Simulations

Abstract: The single and two-phase flow field of a rotating disc contactor (RDC) extraction column is simulated with the help of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The simulations were validated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The single phase setup was used to test different turbulence models, and a 2D and 3D grid approach. For the two-phase simulations, a 2D computational grid and the Euler-Euler model was used. The two-phase PIV measurements are possible when using an iso-optical system, where the … Show more

“…The liquid-liquid flow is modeled using a Reynolds averaged turbulence model in conjunction with the Eulerian two-fluid equations. In previous work, the simulated flow fields of the two-fluid model with constant d 32 were compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements, taken on the same pilot scale column, and agreed well with each other (Drumm and Bart, 2006). The turbulence has been modelled by the realizable kmodel, which delivers the best results for the present two-phase flow (Drumm and Bart, 2006).…”

“…The Euler-Lagrange method sets one phase as continuous and homogeneous, and the second phase as disperse [14]. The homogeneous phase is treated as a continuum based on the Euler approach by solving the energy, mass, and momentum balances.…”
