Hydrogen water ameliorates the severity of atopic dermatitis-like lesions and decreases interleukin-1β, interleukin-33, and mast cell infiltration in NC/Nga mice

Abstract: Objectives:To examine the effect of hydrogen water (HW) on the severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) and elucidate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Methods:For this experimental study between March 2015 and December 2015, NC/Nga mice characterized by mild AD severity were given either HW (n=11) or purified water (PW) (n=9) ad libitum; specific-pathogen-free mice (n=9) were used as AD-free control. Atopic dermatitis severity score and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were examined at baseline (0 week),… Show more

“…Molecular hydrogen has been shown to decrease the expression of various proinflammatory factors including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, IL-10, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [16,19]. This finding was supported in the clinical literature pertaining to HRW but not to the other forms of hydrogen-rich supplementation (transdermal or oral tablets) provided in the current report [8].…”

“…Paraffin-embedded fixed tissue samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or toluidine blue following established protocols ( 28 ). Level of skin inflammation was assessed using skin thickness measurements, and analysis of inflammatory and mast cell numbers in lesional skin of OVA-induced AD-like skin lesions of Flii +/− , wild-type, and Flii Tg/Tg mice using high magnification images and light microscopy using optimized protocols using Image Pro-Plus 5.1 program (MediaCybernetics Inc.) as previously described ( 24 ).…”

“…In many diseases, such as airway inflammation and cerebral ischemia, type I hypersensitivity caused by mast cell activation will aggravate the tissue congestion and edema [ 12 , 13 ]. H 2 inhibits the body's inflammatory response by inhibiting Th2 reaction to reduce mast cell activation as well [ 14 ]. H 2 can also regulate inflammation by regulating the physiological pathway of T cells.…”
