Hydrogenation in supercritical conditions catalyzed by palladium supported on modified activated carbon

Abstract: Biomass is expected to be a substitute for traditional fossil fuels because it is renewable and environmentally friendly. Bio-oil, as an important utilization of biomass, has a complex composition. Accordingly, it remains a great challenge for oxygenated compounds in bio-oil to be upgraded, especially for furfural. In this research, a highly active catalyst with 1 wt% palladium supported on activated carbon (Pd/AC) was prepared by impregnating Pd species on modified activated carbon, which was applied to furfu… Show more

“…A recent study used density functional theory to show that furan (decarbonylation product) forms under low hydrogen coverage but furfuryl alcohol (hydrogenation product) forms at high hydrogen coverage . Experimental studies supported these computational results by demonstrating that the selectivity for furan shifted to furfuryl alcohol at increased H 2 pressure . Hydrogen coverage also affects relative selectivity toward hydrodeoxygenation over hydrogenation.…”

“…[43] Experimental studies supported these computational results by demonstrating that the selectivity for furan shifted to furfuryl alcohol at increased H 2 pressure. [41,53,54] Hydrogen coverage also affects relative selectivity toward hydrodeoxygenation over hydrogenation. Under H 2rich conditions, Cu/SiO 2 yields higher selectivity for furfuryl alcohol at lower temperatures and for 2-methylfuran at higher temperatures due to the proposed Eley-Rideal mechanism.…”

“…Furfural (99%), Ni(NO 3 ) 2 $6H 2 O (98%), and Cu(NO 3 ) 2 $3H 2 O (99%) were purchased from Aladdin Chemistry Co. Ltd. CNTs was purchased from Beijing DK nano technology Co. Ltd (purity >95%). Our previous studies have proved that oxygenated functional groups on the surface of support mainly play a key role for the metal dispersed [31]. Raw CNTs (97.6 m 2 /g) was pretreated with 140 mL of concentrated HNO 3 at 120 C for 4 h with continuous magnetic stirring.…”

“…Finally, the reactor was cooled down, and the liquid products were analyzed by GCeMS and GC (equipped with HP-5 capillary column and flame ionization detector (FID)). The quantitative analysis was by the formerly described procedure using known standards and an internal normalization method [31]. Performance of catalysts was evaluated in terms of (%) conversion of furfural and (%) selectivity to THFA calculated on the amount of converted furfural.…”

“…However, the environmental regulations have directed the catalyst development from chromium to more harmless metals, such as Ni and noble metals . The majority of the studied noble metal and Ni catalysts have been commercial or prepared on commercial activated carbon supports: Ru/C, Pt/C, Pd/C, and Ni/C . However, little is known about the effect of the structure of activated carbon (AC) on furfural hydrotreatment.…”
