Population in Adamawa Plateau faced to borehole failure and return to alternative water supply structures (wells and catchments) with a doubtful quality. This study was carried out to highlight the location of aquifers, their hydrodynamics characteristics and groundwaters quality in Mbakaou locality, which belong to the Adamawa Region. Combination of geological and geoelectrical surveys at 10 stations, with hydrodynamic study of 4 boreholes were carried out to characterize aquifers. Hydrochemical analysis of 10 waters samples has been done to determine physico-chemical water quality and origin of waters mineralization. Geological studies show that basement rocks, which constitute fractured aquifers, consists of a large assemblage of granitoid. Geophysics and drilling data highlight superficial aquifers located between 2 and 17 m and fractured aquifers located between 11 and 74 m, with resistivity ranging from 50 to 671 Ω.m. The borehole have yield varying between 2.80 and 5.14 m3/h. Transmissivity and permeability ranging from 10-6 to 10-5 m2/s and 10-7 to 10-6 m/s respectively, indicating that aquifers are semi-permeable. Waters are of good quality compared to WHO norms and weakly mineralized (35 to 247.9 mg/l). Piper diagram show that calcium and magnesium bicarbonate facies is dominant. Mineralisation of water is mainly influenced by water-rock interaction through silicate weathering.

A comprehensive chemical quality assessment of groundwater resources in the Talensi District has been conducted using conventional graphical methods and multivariate statistical techniques. The study sought to determine the main controls of groundwater chemistry and its suitability for domestic and irrigation purposes in the district. Silicate and carbonate mineral weathering were identified as the main controls on groundwater chemistry in the district, with reverse ion exchange also playing a role. High nitrate and lead levels observed have been associated with agrochemicals and wastewater from farms and homes. Three main flow regimes have been identified with Q-mode cluster analysis, in which mixed cation water types have been revealed, where areas designated as recharge zones are dominated by Na+ + K+–Mg2+–HCO3− fresh water types characterised by low mineralisation and pH, which evolve into Mg2+– Na+ + K+– HCO3− fresh water type with corresponding increased mineralisation of the groundwater. Based on the water quality index (WQI) technique modified for the district and an interpolation technique using ordinary kriging developed from a well-fitted exponential semivariogram for the estimated WQIs, the groundwater quality has been spatially classified as generally ‘good’ to ‘excellent’ for domestic purposes. Generally, the quality of groundwater for domestic usage deteriorates as one moves towards the north of the district, whereas waters in the east and west present the best quality. Classifications based on the United States Salinity Laboratory (USSL), Wilcox, and Doneen diagrams suggest that groundwater from the unconfined aquifers of the district is of excellent quality for irrigation purposes.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the hydrogeochemical characteristics and water environmental quality of shallow groundwater in the Suxian mining area of Huaibei coalfield, China. The natural formation process of shallow groundwater in Suxian is explored using Piper trilinear charts and Gibbs diagrams, and by examining the ratios between the major ions. United States Salinity Laboratory (USSL) charts, Wilcox diagrams, and the water quality index (WQI) are further employed to quantify the differences in water quality. The results reveal that the main hydrochemical facies of groundwater are HCO3–Ca, and that silicate dissolution is the main factor controlling the ion content in shallow groundwater. The USSL charts and Wilcox diagrams show that most of the water samples would be acceptable for use in irrigation systems. The WQI results for each water sample are compared and analyzed, and the quality of groundwater samples around collapse ponds is found to be relatively poor.
