Dynamics of heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, and Cd in surface water of Mahanadi River estuarine systems were studied taking 31 different stations and three different seasons. This study demonstrates that the elemental concentrations are extremely variable and most of them are higher than the World river average. Among the heavy metals, iron is present at highest concentration while cadmium is at the least. The spatial pattern of heavy metals suggests that their anthropogenic sources are possibly from two major fertilizer plants and municipal sewage from three major towns as well as agricultural runoff. The temporal variations for metals like Fe, Cu, and Pb exhibit higher values during the monsoon season, which are related to agricultural runoff. Concentrations of Ni, Pb, and Cd exceed the maximum permissible limits of surface water quality in some polluted stations and pose health risks. Dissolved heavy metals like Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni, and Pb exhibit a non-conservative behavior during estuarine mixing, while Zn, Cu, and Co distribution is conservative. Distribution of cadmium in the estuarine region indicates some mobilization which may be due to desorption. The enrichment ratio data suggest that various industrial wastes and municipal wastes contribute most of the dissolved metals in the Mahanadi River. The Mahanadi River transports 18.216 × 10(3) t of total heavy metals into the Bay of Bengal and the calculated rate of erosion in the basin is 128.645 kg km(-2) year(-1).

The Yellow River is the second longest river in China and the cradle of the Chinese civilization. The source region of the Yellow River is the most important water holding area for the Yellow River, about 49.2% of the whole runoff comes from this region. However, for the special location, it is a region with most fragile eco-environment in China as well. Eco-environmental degradation in the source region of the Yellow River has been a very serious ecological and socially economic problem. According to census data, historical documents and climatic information, during the last half century, especially the last 30 years, great changes have taken place in the eco-environment of this region. Such changes are mainly manifested in the temporal-spatial changes of water environment, deglaciation, permafrost reduction, vegetation degeneracy and desertification extent, which led to land capacity decreasing and river disconnecting. At present, desertification of the region is showing an accelerating tendency. This paper analyzes the present status of eco-environment degradation in this region supported by GIS and RS, as well as field investigation and indoor analysis, based on knowledge, multi-source data is gathered and the classification is worked out, deals with their natural and anthropogenic causes, and points out that in the last half century the desertification and environmental degradation of this region are mainly attributed to human activities under the background of regional climate changes. To halt further degradation of the environment of this region, great efforts should be made to use land resources rationally, develop advantages animal agriculture and protect the natural grassland.

The Wadi Al Ayn plain is a coastal system on the eastern coast of Cap Bon in northeastern Tunisia. The area is known for its intensive agriculture, which is based mainly on groundwater exploitation. The aim of this study is to identify the sources of groundwater salinization in the Wadi Al Ayn aquifer system and deduce the processes that drive the mineralization. Surface water and groundwater samples were taken and analysed for major ions and stable isotopes. The geochemical data were used to characterize and classify the water samples based on a variety of ion plots and diagrams. Stable isotopes are useful tools to help us understand recharge processes and to differentiate between salinity origins. The oilfield brines infiltrated from the sandy bed of Wadi Al Ayn comprise the main source of groundwater salinization in the central part of the plain, while seawater intrusion is mainly responsible for the increased salinity in the groundwater of the coastal part of the plain (at Daroufa).Key words hydrogeochemistry; stable isotopes; salinization; ephemeral coastal plain; Cap Bon; Tunisia Hydrogéochimie et salinisation des eaux souterraines d'une plaine côtière éphémère au Cap Bon, Tunisie Résumé La plaine de l'Oued Al Ayn est un système côtier appartenant à la côte orientale du Cap Bon au Nord-Est de la Tunisie. La zone est connue pour ses activités agricoles intensives principalement basées sur l'exploitation des eaux souterraines. L'objectif de ce travail est d'identifier les origines de la salinisation des eaux du système aquifère de la plaine de l'Oued Al Ayn et d'éclaircir ses mécanismes et ses processus. Les eaux de surface ainsi que les eaux souterraines ont été échantillonnées et analysées pour déterminer les teneurs des éléments chimiques majeurs et des isotopes stables. Ces données géochimiques ont servi à caractériser et classer les eaux échantillonnées en se basant sur de nombreux diagrammes et illustrations. Les isotopes stables constituent un outil efficace permettant de comprendre les processus de recharge et d'identifier les origines de la salinisation. Les saumures pétrolifères qui se sont infiltrées à travers le lit sableux de l'Oued Al Ayn constituent la cause majeure da la salinisation des eaux souterraines dans la partie centrale de la plaine, tandis que l'augmentation de la salinité des eaux souterraines dans la zone côtière de la plaine (Daroufa) est principalement due à l'intrusion marine.
