Long-term radiometric and hydrological investigations at the Wettinquelle mineral spring in Bad Brambach demonstrated the existence of a fluidal connection to the currently most frequent earthquake-swarm hypocentre at Novy Kostel, 10 km east of Bad Brambach. The gas composition and δ 13 C CH4 values of this mineral spring were monitored from May 2000 until October 2003, i.e., before, during and after the protracted swarm earthquake period from late August until late December 2000. About eight weeks after the beginning of the seismically active period, we observed an increase in the methane concentration (from ≈40 up to ≈250 ppmv) accompanied by a decrease in the methane δ 13 C values from ≈-50 to ≈-70‰. For more than two years, such periods of variations were repeatedly observed before returning to the "baseline" signature. It is assumed that this additional methane was microbially produced in the granite-enclosed aquifer using H 2 , which was released (seismically triggered) from the fissured granite in which the Wettinquelle spring capture is located. The additional methane production might have started as a co-seismic event, with only the migration from the deep granite to the surface being responsible for the eight-week delay.

To detect the precursors of deep groundwater changes related to anticipated large earthquakes off Miyagi Prefecture, we selected two deep boreholes located on the hanging walls of active reverse faults, and established an observation network with a real-time, automatic data-acquisition system. After taking into account the hydrological conditions and the effects of barometric pressure, the earth s tide, and rainfall, as well as the resolution limits of temperature measurements of groundwater for the two boreholes, we identifi ed plausible earthquake-related groundwater changes during the observation period ( April to December ). One of the events was a preseismic . °C fall in groundwater temperature that began . hours prior to the main shock (M J . ) of the December off-Miyagi Prefecture earthquake. The second event was a preseismic .°C rise in groundwater temperature that started hours before a shallow earthquake (M J . ) located beneath Sendai Bay on April . The third event was a coseismic temperature fall by as much as . °C associated with a shallow earthquake (M J ) on May , located close to one of the observation sites. The resolution limit of our temperature observation system indicates that it has the potential to detect the precursors of future large earthquakes off Miyagi Prefecture if associated with preseismic slip as large as that for a M J . earthquake.
