Hydrogeomorphology: overview of an emerging science

Abstract: Abstract:Here, we introduce a series of 14 papers generated from a symposium related to hydrogeomorphology that was part of the Fifth International Conference on Geomorphology. Additionally, recent developments in hydrogeomorphology are highlighted, particularly with respect to research in Japan. Linkages are drawn between natural hazards and the necessity to focus on hydrogeomorphic processes. Future research needs are discussed in the areas of temporal and spatial patterns of water and sediment dynamics, inc… Show more

“…These elements (structure and function) are influenced by diverse variables (e.g. the type and gradient of the valley, soil controls, riparian vegetation and land uses), but the flow regime is most likely the most influential variable in the development of the geomorphic attributes of river systems (Bendix and Hupp, 2000;Bunn and Arthington, 2002;Sidle and Onda, 2004;Hupp and Rinaldi, 2007). The dominant (channel-forming) discharge of a river is closely related to these attributes.…”

“…Landslides and debris flows can also load sediment to fluvial systems, degrading aquatic habitat (e.g., Lamberti et al 1991;Gomi et al 2002). The potential causes of slope failures include the influences of hydrology, geology, soils, volcanoes, seismicity, and processes, including slope failure (Scheidegger 1972;Dunne 1990Dunne , 1994Sidle and Onda 2004).…”

“…We therefore propose a simple and functional approach based on hydrogeomorphology defined as the 'interactions and linkages of the hydrologic processes with landforms or earth materials and the interaction of geomorphic processes with surface and subsurface water in temporal and spatial dimensions' (Sidle & Onda 2004). It is hypothesized that the abundance or natural production of fish or shrimps in mangroves (or their nursery ground value) is related to the mangrove hydrogeomorphology.…”
