Hydrolysis of Dimethyl Methylphosphonate (DMMP) in Hot-Compressed Water

Abstract: Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) is widely used as a chemical surrogate for G-and V-type nerve agents, exhibiting similar physiochemical properties, yet significantly lower toxicity. Continuous hydrolysis of DMMP in hot-compressed water is performed at temperatures from 200 to 300 °C, pressures of 20 and 30 MPa, and residence times from 30 to 80 s to evaluate the effects of pressure and temperature on reaction kinetics. DMMP hydrolysis is observed to follow pseudofirst-order reaction behavior, producing methy… Show more

“…DMMP evaporates from the lens upon its removal from the environment. Furthermore, DMMP hydrolyzes into methylphosphonic acid and methanol; [ 61 ] consequently, the amount of DMMP within the aqueous lens decreases over time if the lens maintains its liquid state above the DRH (Figure 4b, top). Lowering the RH to below the ERH causes the liquid lenses to phase transition into salt crystals, which can be reversibly controlled, as shown in Figure 4c.…”

“…The Raman instrument is a high-resolution handheld immersion fiberoptic probe (MarqMetrix, Seattle, WA), operating in the backscatter configuration at a 785 nm excitation wavelength and 300 mW. The system and the calibration methods have been used in previous studies for the detection and quantification of model alcohols and other organic compounds. ,, A semimanual fluorescent background subtraction method was used for consistent postprocessing spectroscopy . The probe was inserted into the collected effluent, and the analysis was performed offline.…”

“…, a greater [OH] − concentration, and the presence of fluorinated intermediates among the degradation products. Pinkard et al 21 reported that under alkaline hydrothermal conditions (350 °C, >20.7 MPa), treatment with 5 M NaOH for 6 hours on a mixture containing about 79.8% PFOS, 13.3% PFHxS, and a minority of other PFSAs resulted in 99.996% PFSA removal and complete release of F − . Research indicates that short-chain PFSAs are more refractory than long-chain PFSAs.…”
