Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Effects in a Mussel-Inspired Citrate-Based Adhesive

Abstract: The citrate-based tissue adhesive, synthesized by citric acid, diol, and dopamine, is a kind of mussel-inspired adhesive. The adhesion of mussel-inspired adhesive is not completely dependent on 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (Dopa) groups. The backbone structure of the adhesive also greatly affects the adhesion. In this study, to explore the effects of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of the backbone structure on adhesion, we prepared a series of citrate-based tissue adhesives (POEC-d) by changing the molar rati… Show more

“…94 When designing underwater adhesives, it is necessary to select the appropriate size and ratio of hydrophobic groups to achieve optimal adhesion performance. 95,96 Wang et al synthesized different polymers by introducing aliphatic diols with carbon chain lengths of 4, 8, and 12, respectively. Through experiments, it was found that the polymers synthesized from aliphatic diols with a carbon chain length of 8 have the best underwater adhesion properties.…”

“…Marine organism mussels have good adhesion to wet substrates due to the secretion of mussel foot proteins consisting of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polypeptide chains 31 . The hydrophilic parts promote interfacial penetration, and the hydrophobic parts facilitate stable adhesion 32 . Radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP) is a kind of ring-opening polymerization initiated by radicals as active species 33 .…”

“…The strong wet adhesion of the copolymer elastomer may be resulted from the following mechanisms (Figure 2D; Figures S11-S13, Supporting Information): a) Alkyl chains of C 12 were used as the hydrophobic moieties to repelling water during attachment. [34][35][36] Fluorescence microscope and dynamic contact angles were used to monitor the water repelling process (Figure S11, Supporting Information). In Figure S11A (Supporting Information), when the melted elastomer dropped on the glass with labeled water, the interfacial water was drained in 60 s. In contrast, the aqueous layer was still there after 60 s without the addition of TA-C 12 segment (Figure S11B, Supporting Information).…”
