Hydrophobic fraction of Taenia saginata metacestodes, rather than hydrophilic fraction, contains immunodominant markers for diagnosing human neurocysticercosis

Abstract: Hydrophobic fraction of Taenia saginata metacestodes, rather than hydrophilic fraction, contains immunodominant markers for diagnosing human neurocysticercosisFração hidrofóbica de metacestódeos de Taenia saginata, ao contrário da fração hidrofílica, contém marcadores imunodominantes para o diagnóstico de neurocisticercose humana

“…Peptides showed low reactivity with healthy sera and few cross‐reactions with other parasitic diseases, suggesting that small linear peptides can interact with their targets in a more specific manner when compared with complex antigens, which contain many unwanted epitopes. Part of these few cross‐reactive mimotopes with sera from other parasitic infections were already expected for taeniasis and hymenolepiasis, which have common phylogenetic backgrounds (11,42,43), but clinical signs can discriminate those diseases from NC. Despite these promising specificity properties of the selected mimotopes, more tests with additional samples for hydatidosis may be necessary for final confirmation of the higher specificity.…”

“…Another important observation reported here is the absence of cross‐reactions with sera from patients infected with E. granulosus , especially because this is the most cross‐reactive species with NC, owing to the presence of many common antigenic components between Taenia sp and Echinococcus sp. (42,43).…”

“…For these reasons, immunoassays that are standardised for a proper diagnosis of NCC will lead to better clinical management of NCC patients because the immunoassays support diagnoses for patients whose clinical and imaging profiles are compatible with NCC (Michelet et al 2011). Among various immunological methods, the ELISA and immunoblot are the most frequently used to detect antibodies against T. solium antigens in serum or cerebrospinal fluid samples, but these tests have shown different degrees of sensitivity and specificity, depending on the method of antigen preparation used (Shiguekawa et al 2000, Barcelos et al 2007, Deckers & Dorny 2010, Gonçalves et al 2010, Lee et al 2011, Michelet et al 2011, Ferrer et al 2012). …”
