Hydrothermal synthesis of magnetite: investigation of influence of aging time and mechanism

Abstract: Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) particles are prepared by a hydrothermal method using ethylene glycol as the solvent. Aging time is a very important factor in the reaction process. The properties and morphology of the products with different aging times are investigated. In the initial stage of the reaction (1 and 2 h), the main powders were iron hydroxides. Fe 3 O 4 particles generated (3 h) and grew into spherical shapes (4-10 h) with the extended aging time. The particle size and the specific saturation magnetisation… Show more

“…Compared to other methods, such as chemical and biosynthesis of magnetite [13,14,15], hydrothermal synthesis can be performed as a one-pot reaction. In addition, using ethylene glycol as the solvent alleviates the oxidation of Fe 2+ , allowing the reaction to proceed in the presence of oxygen [16]. When coated with various functional groups, Fe 3 O 4 NPs can present differences in cytotoxicity and genotoxicity to different cell types [17].…”

“…Since then, it has become a popular method to make Fe 3 O 4 ‐based functional nanostructured materials [10–13]. Previous works mainly focused on the effects of process parameters or organic additives on the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 while the effects of iron precursors have been rarely investigated [14, 15]. Without the addition of a capping agent (e.g.…”

“…The method we have chosen to upscale will be the one followed by [36], choosing to use as reactants the iron salt, starch and sodium acetate, and as reaction conditions a temperature of 80 • C during 20 min and then a hydrothermal treatment of 20 h. The involved reactions (2)-(4) are [37][38][39][40]:…”
