Hydrotropic and surfactant properties of novel diisopropyl naphthalene sulfonates

Abstract: A novel surfactant and hydrotrope, sodium diisopropylnaphthalene sulfonate (SDIPNS) has been developed. It contains about 92% diisopropylnaphthalene sulfonate, compared to other materials which are less than 50% diisopropylnaphthalene sulfonate. Aqueous solutions of 34-36% active SDIPNS have dual functionality. They have excellent surface properties and are compatible with conventional anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants. They demonstrate good laundering detergency in combination with sodium lauryl e… Show more

“…Micelle aggregation numbers (n) were determined by using the steady-state fluorescence-quenching method (8). In equation form, n can be calculated from [3] where I 0 and I Q represent the fluorescence intensity in the absence and presence of quencher, respectively, and Q is the concentration of quencher. In our experiments, Ru(bipy) 3 2+ was used as a probe, and 9,10-dimethylanthracene was used as a quencher.…”

“…Alkyl naphthalene sulfonates are generally considered to be hydrotropes (10,11). Hydrotropes are amphiphile molecules with a short lipophilic moiety that can improve the aqueous solubility of lipophiles and reduce the viscosity and cloudiness of an aqueous solution containing a sparing amount of soluble components (10)(11)(12).…”

“…Naphthalene moiety is often found in many compounds: alkyl naphthalene sulfonate surfactants, synthetic dyes, and even as a part of cytotoxic agents, etc., so it is not surprising that naphthalene derivatives are often used as a precursors in organic syntheses. Naphthalene derivatives with substituents in position 2 (i. e. β) are of special interest, due to their versatile use, as intermediates for synthesis of pharmaceuticals, photo‐chemicals, plant growth hormones, antiseptics, insecticides, dyes and other organic compounds .…”
