Hydroxychloroquine reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in systemic lupus erythematosus: a longitudinal evaluation of the lipid-lowering effect

Abstract: This longitudinal study demonstrated the beneficial effect of antimalarials on lipids in SLE since this therapy induced a reduction of atherogenic lipoproteins.

“…The added lipidlowering benefit of HCQ in rheumatic diseases is well documented (32,33), including in RA (19). Our findings were similar; HCQ had independent associations with lower lipid values, save for the nonsignificant elevation of HDL.…”

“…HCQ users met NCEP-ATP III lipid target levels for TC, LDL, and combined LDL and HDL values. Current longitudinal studies of the lipid-lowering effects of HCQ are unblinded, are of small numbers as in systemic lupus erythematosus, or, in RA, include additional DMARDs in post-hoc analyses (15,32). Our VA pharmacy administrative data permitted evaluation of HCQ-lipid associations over various periods of drug exposure, an analysis not previously described.…”

“…Antimalarials have additional beneficial effects in SLE patients: HCQ is associated with lower serum cholesterol levels (11)(12)(13)(14), higher bone mineral density (15,16), and HCQ protects against future thrombotic events (7,17,18).…”
