“…Some studies focused on the relation between hygro-expansion and moisture content of paper in order to understand the factors affecting them (Nordman, 1958;Salmen and Olsson, 2014;Uesaka and Qi, 1994). Also, studies on the dimensional stability of paper at the macro-scale were carried out (Page and Tydemann, 1961;Uesaka, 1994;Niskanen, 1998;Niskanen et al, 1997;Larsson and Wagberg, 2008;Erkkila et al, 2015;Bosco et al, 2015b). Several other works were done on studying the hygro-expansion of paper fibres.…”

“…Earlier studies demonstrated that the effective stiffness of the network is mainly dependent on the density of the network, fibre orientations, fibre properties, and of the inter-fibre connectivity resulting from the bonds (Mao et al, 2017;Karakoç et al, 2017;Heyden, 2000;Bergström, 2018;Cox, 1952). It was furthermore revealed that when subjected to moisture changes, the effective hygro-expansivity of the paper network is governed mainly by the bonded regions of the network (Bosco et al, 2015a;Samantray et al, 2021b;Uesaka, 1994;Uesaka and Qi, 1994;Vainio and Paulapuro, 2007;Niskanen, 1998;Larsson and Wågberg, 2008;Erkkila et al, 2015;Nordman, 1958;Salmén et al, 1987;Schulgasser and Page, 1988). In another study (Thorpe et al, 1976), the properties of the bonded fibres were computed from load-displacement measurements.…”

“…The hygro-expansion of paper has been thoroughly investigated in the literature, mostly through experiments at the macroscopic scale, see e.g. [3,4,5,6,7,8,9]. In these studies, the influence of several features of the fibrous network on the effective response has been analysed, for instance the inter-fibre bonds properties [7,8].…”
