Hyper- bzw. normobare Sauerstofftherapie zur Behandlung von Migräne und Clusterkopfschmerzen

Abstract: There is some evidence that HBOT is effective for termination of acute migraine. NBOT was similarly effective in cluster headache, however with sparse data. Because of costs and poor availability HBOT cannot be regarded as a routine therapy. Further indications in the case of treatment failure using standard therapy need to be defined based on data of future clinical trials.

“…HBOT had rapid onset and a long lasting effect in patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia [ 18 ]. It was found to be an effective treatment in cluster headaches and migraine [ 19 ] and fibromyalgia [ 20 , 21 ]. The potential benefits of HBOT in the treatment of CPRS were initially reported in a small double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study at a military hospital in Turkey on 71 patients with six-week history of traumatic CRPS of the upper extremity [ 22 ].…”

“…The current evidence surrounding NBOT and HBOT efficacy for migraines is not great after the review of five main studies, two of which have low-double digit meta-analysis and one Cochrane review of 11 studies, which Bennett et al (43) has been the historical center regarding this substantiation. These studies collectively state that the therapeutic modality is plagued by issues in true randomization methods versus allocation concealment methods, and when considering the standardization of therapy provided, the quality of the evidence was low (44). NBOT historically has demonstrated termination of acute headaches for both migraines and cluster headaches, but consistency has proven elusive.…”
