Hyperbaric oxygen protects from sepsis mortality via an interleukin-10–dependent mechanism*

Abstract: HBO2 may be protective in CLP sepsis within a window of oxygen dosing. The mechanism of HBO2 protection may be potentially linked in part to expression of IL-10, as peritoneal macrophages demonstrated enhanced IL-10 expression and IL-10 mice were not protected by HBO2 treatment.

“…The figure is representative of at least three experiments performed on different days induced shock? Previous studies, including ours, have shown different mechanisms of action to explain the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity of HBO [19,34]. Here we hypothesize that HBO reduced TLR2 and TLR4 mRNA through a direct repression of gene transcription.…”

“…According to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society indications comprise carbon monoxide poisoning, gas embolism [3], clostridial myonecrosis [4], compartment syndrome and other traumatic ischemia, non-healing wounds [5], necrotizing soft tissue infections and others [2,6]. Current research also investigates beneficial effects of HBO in the context of sepsis [7][8][9][10]. HBO increases the physically solved oxygen in blood multifold resulting in a partial pressure of about 2,200 mmHg and an oxygen concentration of about 27 ml O 2 /dl blood at 3 atmospheres absolute (ATA) [2,11].…”

“…One possibility is that timing of oxygen administration fell into the second phase ROP for some infants exhibiting its potentially protective effects. Another possibility is that such an effect might be similar to the protection by hyperbaric oxygen from sepsis mortality via an interleukin-10-dependent mechanism in mice [60] .…”
