Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Can Diminish Fibromyalgia Syndrome – Prospective Clinical Trial

Abstract: BackgroundFibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a persistent and debilitating disorder estimated to impair the quality of life of 2–4% of the population, with 9:1 female-to-male incidence ratio. FMS is an important representative example of central nervous system sensitization and is associated with abnormal brain activity. Key symptoms include chronic widespread pain, allodynia and diffuse tenderness, along with fatigue and sleep disturbance. The syndrome is still elusive and refractory. The goal of this study was t… Show more

“…HBOT is mostly performed in developed countries, such as USA and UK. According to SF-36 instrument, HBOT improves vitality, physical function, body pain, total health perceptions, mental health and physical, emotional, and social role functioning in patients with troublesome diseases (15,17,19,21,27).…”

“…The use of HBOT, although well documented, is still considered controversial by some. Recent publications have reported variable outcomes in great part because of using protocols that differ significantly in depth, duration, frequency and number of sessions [36][37][38]. It appears that HBOT can be effective in decreasing chronic inflammation in the brain by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine activation and through provocation of stem cell activity [7][8][9][10].…”

“…As current pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies act differently on the different components of pain, functional neuroimaging could be a valuable and readily available tool to guide individual therapeutic strategy and provide objective follow-up of pain processing recovery under treatment [29]. In this line, relationship with predictive response and follow-up of the recovery have been described with ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy [30][31][32][33].…”
