Hyperbranched polymers – their application in printing inks

Abstract: Urania ® flexographic printing ink was modified with the commercially available hyperbranched polymer Boltorn H2004. The surface tension of the printing inks was measured and the rheology behaviour of the printing inks was assessed. The flow curves (shear stress vs. shear rate) for the printing inks exhibited pseudoplastic behaviour. Modified flexographic inks were laboratory printed on three different plastic films: polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate. The impact of a small amount of hy… Show more

“…It can be concluded that a small addition of hyperbranched oligoether changes the color properties of the overprinted ink film, which was also observed in previous studies. 17,18 Gloss is one of the most important parameters in printing and packaging technology, because gloss affects the print quality by providing a better overall look and greater depth to colors. 35,36 Gloss is a property of a material that is responsible for light reflection from a surface.…”

“…1 The flow time of the original Process ink was 17.0 s, and the printing ink modified with BPG was 17.1 s; therefore, the addition of the oligomer had no impact on the flow time of the ink, which has also been observed by us previously. 17,18 The adhesion of the ink film to the base (oPP or PET plastic films) should be examined before the optical density, color values (L*, a*, b*) and mechanical properties of the print are measured. It is necessary to assess the adhesion of the ink film to the base, because this parameter determines the print quality as well as the interactions between the overprinted ink film and the base.…”

“…Then, the ink was stirred for 30 min with a mechanical stirrer (Silverson, UK) as a disperser at 1800 rpm. The mass fractions of ILs in the printing ink were 0.01, as optimised for the best print quality from a previous investigation . The rheological characteristics of the flexographic printing inks were specified by the flow time in a flow cup (volume 100 ml, outlet diameter 4 mm).…”
