Hyperemesis Gravidarum in Eastern Asian Population

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the clinical features of hyperemesis gravidarum in Eastern Asian women. Method: Retrospective cohort study was conducted based on delivery records. Hyperemesis gravidarum was defined as a pregnancy with severe nausea and vomiting necessitating hospitalization with a body weight loss of over 5% from pre-pregnancy weight with ketonuria. The onset is at 10 weeks of gestation or less. Maternal and neonatal variables were compared. Result: There were 3,350 singleton deliveries in the study… Show more

“…The incidence of HG was 1.6 %, which is lower than the 3.6 % incidence reported by the latest study in the general Japanese population [4], but within the range of 0.3–2.0 % reported by other studies [1–3]. In addition, the participants in our study reported an incidence of NVP of 10.2 %, which is lower than the 33 % incidence reported by Chortatos et al [22]; the difference is likely related to the fact that we defined NVP based on self-reported accounts of reduced food intake.…”

“…There is a high incidence of nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy (NVP), reported at 35–91 % [1–4]. NVP can become severe in 0.3–3.6 % of cases, with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) as an extreme form of NVP that is associated with weight loss [1–4].…”

“…It is associated with numerous physiological implications to the mother such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and extreme weight loss, and concerns regarding outcomes of babies born to women with HG have repeatedly been raised (Fejzo et al 2009). Maternal genotype or ethnicity may play a major role in its pathogenesis and one group reports an increased incidence of HG in the East Asian population (Matsuo et al 2011). It still remains elusive whether such diff erences can be attributed to genetic factors related to ethnicity aff ecting outcomes in women with HG, or whether they could be a result of cultural diff erences aff ecting reporting of symptomology.…”

“…For example, a Malaysian study identified 192 recorded cases (3.9%) out of 4937 maternities [9]. Additionally, a study of 3350 singleton deliveries in an Eastern Asian population observed HG in 119 (3.6%) of the population [10]. As mentioned, a study of 1867 singleton live births revealed the highest rate of severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in Shanghai, China, from 1986 to 1987, with an incidence of 10.8%.…”
