Hypertension Incidence Is Predicted by High Levels of Hopelessness in Finnish Men

Abstract: Abstract-Recent studies have reported that hopelessness is an important factor in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, including ischemic heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, and atherosclerotic progression. This study examined the relationship between hopelessness and incident hypertension in a population-based sample of 616 initially normotensive, middle-aged men from eastern Finland, an area with high rates of cardiovascular disease. Participants completed a medical examination and a series of psy… Show more

“…Since prior literature has established that depression is a prognostic risk factor for CV complications, the strong correlation of ED on one hand and depression and low quality of life on the other, in our study can be viewed as an added CV risk in patients with hypertension. 6,7,16,17 The significance of this link between ED and CV risk in patients with hypertension is further magnified by our prior finding that ED is highly prevalent and severe in patients with hypertension. 3 Clinical depression is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease for several decades after the onset of the clinical depression.…”

“…Depression may be associated with a twofold to threefold increase of cardiovascular mortality (36,37). A sense of hopelessness, defined as feeling unable to reach one's goals in life, has been shown to be predictive of a threefold increase in the incidence of hypertension in the near future, as well as worsening of overall cardiovascular status (38,39). We have no direct evidence that emotional stress related to information about medical risk can aggravate the disease process itself, but such a link appears biologically plausible.…”

“…Hopelessness, defined as negative expectancies about oneself and the future, was measured by two items used in the Kupio Heart Disease Study (28)(29)(30). These items were "I feel that it is impossible to reach the goals I would like to strive for" and "The future seems to me to be hopeless, and I can't believe that things are changing for the better".…”
