Hypocrellin Derivative‐Loaded Calcium Phosphate Nanorods as NIR Light‐Triggered Phototheranostic Agents with Enhanced Tumor Accumulation for Cancer Therapy

Abstract: Dopamine modified hypocrellin B (DAHB) derivative‐loaded calcium phosphate nanorods (DAHB@CaP NRs) were prepared as a novel phototheranostic agent for effective tumor imaging and therapy. DAHB@CaP NRs were obtained through microwave treatment using DAHB, CaCl2, NH3⋅H2O, and H3PO4 as precursors. The DAHB@CaP NRs possessed the following advantages: 1) efficient absorption in the near‐infrared (NIR) region from 650 nm to 800 nm; 2) maximum NIR emission at approximately 735 nm; 3) enhanced cellular uptake efficien… Show more

“…With these benefits, PDA is labeled an excellent coating material that has been used for the adsorption of a wide range of environmental pollutants. , However, there are few reports on the adsorption of gas pollutants using PDA. In addition, the reducibility of dopamine (DA) was utilized for polymerizing to PDA on the surface of various biomaterials, and the negligible biotoxicity of PDA has been verified by previous reports. …”

“…Next, higher cellular internalization of PS could help trap PS in tumors and increase their efficiency by assisting ROS generation within tumor cells. A few methods, such as modifying specific cell-penetrating peptides or targeting moieties that interact with specific receptors expressed on tumor cells 11,12 and transforming the shape or surface charges of nanoparticles 13,14 are often used. Finally, boosting PS release in tumor cells could further enhance PDT efficiency and ameliorate the negative influence of PS on healthy tissues/organs.…”

“…In China, hypocrellins have been used medicinally to treat skin diseases for many years [ 8 ]. In recent years, hypocrellins and their derivatives have been incorporated into polymer micelles or nanoparticles for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections [ 9 ] and cancer therapy [ 10 , 11 , 12 ]. In addition to benefiting the pharmaceutical industry, hypocrellins also have extensive potential applications in the agricultural, cosmetic, food and feed industries [ 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
