Hypodontia of mandibular incisors: considerations on the orthodontic treatment

Abstract: Hypodontia is the most prevalent craniofacial malformation in mankind. It may present a wide variety of manifestations and, depending on the number and location of missing teeth, it may affect the esthetics, mastication, speech and occlusal balance. This paper discusses the therapeutic approaches to solve this condition, describing a case report with hypodontia of one mandibular lateral incisor, which treatment option included space closure at the region of hypodontia associated with composite resin restoratio… Show more

“…However, successful restorative treatment involving implants depends on interdisciplinary treatment planning, especially if pre-prosthetic orthodontic tooth alignment is required ( Richardson and Russell,2001 ). The roots of the teeth adjacent to the edentulous implant region must be parallel or slightly divergent to create sufficient bone ( Albeshri et al, 2018 ) for implant placement, and there must be sufficient space between the crowns to place and restore the implant( Rédua and Rédua,2018 ).…”

“…Moreover, it has been reported that bilateral agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor is more frequent than the unilateral one ( Richardson and Russell,2001 ). Maxillary lateral incisors are more commonly missing than mandibular incisors in Caucasians ( Rédua and Rédua,2018 ). Al-Emran et al studied the prevalence of hypodontia and peg shaped maxillary lateral incisors in 500 male students within the age range 13 – 14 years in Saudi Arabia ( al-Emran, 1990 ).…”

“…Numerical dental abnormalities of permanent dentition, due to dental excess or dental deficiency, frequently result in dental malpositions, whose severity is higher as the dental and facial aesthetics are affected. In these cases the treatment most often involves an interdisciplinary approach: orthodontic, surgical, periodontal and prosthodontic [27,28]. The malposition of the maxillary right cuspid determined its impaction and need for surgical exposure and mechanic strain.…”

“…The methods for correction of Class II malocclusion during growth described in the literature include fixed orthodontic appliances and removable aligners combined with intermaxillary elastics, extraoral appliances 18,19,26 , temporary skeletal anchorage, functional appliances and several types of fixed and removable protraction appliances 18,22,31,32 . Align Technology has recently developed a system known as "wings" for its Different approaches to the treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion during growth: Bionator versus extraoral appliance BBO's Selected Article aligners to correct Class II malocclusion by means of mandibular protraction.…”
