“…S. fruticosa, S. lavanduli-folia and S. plebeia, including S. officinalis, have been studied in normal and alloxan-or streptozotocin-diabetic animals. The best results were obtained with S. lavandulifolia; nevertheless, their main constituents have not been characterized (Zarzuelo et al, 1990;Marles and Farnsworth, 1995). Our results also show that the WEE of S. officinalis has hypoglycaemic activity in normal and alloxan diabetic mice.…”

“…Perfumi et al (1991) reported the ability of Salvia fruticosa to reduce blood glucose levels in alloxan-hyperglycaemic rabbits, but not in normoglycaemic animals, without modifying plasma insulin levels. Zarzuelo et al (1990) demonstrated the potentiation, by Salvia lavandulaefolia extract, of insulin release induced by glucose, and the extract also increased peripheral uptake of glucose, decreased intestinal absorption of glucose and gave hyperplasia of the pancreatic islet ␤ cells. At the same time there are several reports in the literature of the use of Salvia species in treatment of hypertension.…”

“…Since ancient times, this aromatic plant has a history as a cognition enhancer and treatment of memory decline in oral administration (Tildesley et al, 2003). The leaves of S. lavandulifolia are traditionally used as a choleretic by oral administration and as cicatrizing and antiseptic drug topically (Cañigueral et al, 1989;Zrira et al, 2004), and aqueous extract presents hypoglycemic activity after oral administration (Zarzuelo et al, 1991). Furthermore, several pharmacological studies have demonstrated relevant beneficial effects after oral administration of S. lavandulifolia extracts and essential oils for the treatment of dementia (Perry et al, 2001(Perry et al, , 2002Tildesley et al, 2003).…”
