Hypoglycemic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Triterpene Glycoside Fractions from Aeculus hippocastanum Seeds

Abstract: Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.)-derived drugs have shown their potential in biomedical applications. The seed of A. hippocastanum contains various kinds of chemical compounds including phenolics, flavonoids, coumarins, and triterpene saponins. Here, we investigated the chemical components in A. hippocastanum L. grown in Uzbekistan, which has not yet been studied in detail. We identified 30 kinds of triterpene saponins in an extract of A. hippocastanum L. Classifying extracted saponins into eight fra… Show more

“…Flowers of red horse chestnuts contain a satisfactory level of anthocyanin compounds compared with berry fruits such as highbush blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry [ 35 ]. In addition to diminishing disease risk, other functions of plant flavonoids connected with horse chestnut flowers, fruits, leaves, and seeds include vessel strength and wound healing [ 36 ]. Therefore, it may be worth combining the health-promoting and therapeutic effects of horse chestnut flowers and leaves due to their high content of polyphenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids.…”

“…Many biological activities of aescin validate the traditional use of seed extracts. Aescin exhibits potent anti-inflammatory [31,32,48,49], anticancer [44,[50][51][52], antiviral [46,[53][54][55], antifungal [35], antidiabetic [34,45,48], antiedema [32], antioxidative [49,56,57] and anti-apoptotic [39] effects. Aescin is a promising phytochemical for anticancer drug development [50], as well as for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases [39], neuropathy [58] and diabetic nephropathy [59].…”

“…Polysaccharides from Apostichopus japonicus also have antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant attributes ( 17 ). Triterpene glycosides (or triterpene saponin) exhibit hypolipidemic ( 18 ), anti-inflammatory ( 19 ), immunomodulatory ( 20 ), and wound-healing properties ( 21 ), which indirectly contribute to dyslipidemia. Triterpene glycosides are also known to interact with sterol in the membrane of sea cucumbers as a self-defense mechanism against saponin ( 22 , 23 ).…”
