Hypotensive Activity of Melilotus Officinalis (L.) Pallas

Abstract: Melilotus officinalis (L.) Pallas., is used traditionally to treat hypertension and chronic venous insufficiency. The high prevalence of hypertension and the side effects of antihypertensive drugs potentiate us to evaluate Melilotus officinalis. The hypotensive effect of Melilotus officinalis butanolic fraction (MOBF) was investigated in anaesthetized normotensive rats. The doses of 60, 80 and 100 mg/kg, i.v., produced a significant (P<0.05) decrease in blood pressure. The statistically non significant reducti… Show more

The antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, antiinflammatory, neural, protective, sedative, anxiolytic, smooth muscle relaxant and hypotensive activities are among the many pharmacological effects of this plant[ 108 ]. The effects of 0.25% coumarin M. officinalis extract on acute inflammation produced by the oil of turpentine in male rabbits were investigated.…”

“…Oskoueian et al (2011) stated that the borage plant contains alkaloids, tannins, saponins and coumarins. For the Melilotus plant, it is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Fabeaceae (Anwer et al, 2008). Melilotus plant also has the advantage of having antioxidant activity and this biological activity is due to its high content of phenols and flavonoids (Sheikh, 2017).…”
