Hypothesis: Chronic Benign Daily Headache is an Immune Disorder with a Viral Trigger

Abstract: SYNOPSIS The persistence and reactivation of classic viruses may be responsible for some chronic headache syndromes and their exacerbations. Persistent infections may selectively decrease neurotransmitter output. Alternatively, headache may be due to the viral‐induced immune response. Lymphocytes secrete substances with CNS activity. Continuous antigenic stimulation may result in immune complexes, anti‐idiotype antibodies, and autoimmunity. Our studies show an increased incidence of raised thyroid microsomal a… Show more

“…Abrupt transition of episodic migraine to chronic migraine also suggests similar possibilities. Vanast [18], in 1987, suggested autoimmune disorder with a persistent viral trigger for chronic benign daily headache (NDPH). Tissue specificity is a general feature of post-infectious immune-mediated conditions [4].…”

“…They do not have a previous history of migraine or TTH and there is no clear history of trauma [12••]. Epstein-Barr virus has been suggested as an etiology [13]. Its nature suggests it may be related to TTH or migraine headache, or it may represent a new type of previously unclassified headache [14].…”
