Hypoxia induces a complex response of globin expression in zebrafish(Danio rerio)

Abstract: SUMMARY Unlike most mammals, many fish species live and survive in environments with low or changing levels of oxygen. Respiratory proteins like hemoglobin or myoglobin bind or store oxygen, thus enhancing its availability to the respiratory chain in the mitochondria. Here we investigate by means of quantitative real-time PCR the changes of hemoglobin, myoglobin, neuroglobin, cytoglobin and globin X mRNA in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to mild (PO2=∼8.6 kPa) or severe(PO2=∼4.1 kPa) hypoxia. Ne… Show more

“…In adult zebrafish, we and others showed that hypoxia leads to increased Mb expression in different tissues (Roesner et al, 2006, van der Meer et al, 2005. Similar results were found in the liver of adult carp (Fraser et al, 2006).…”

“…After 24-48 h under severe hypoxia (P O2 = 4.1 kPa ∼31 torr) there is no upregulation of GbX, and actually a significant decrease in xgb mRNA was observed. Notably, there was a similar trend by hbα and hbβ, probably indicating that the decrease in xgb mRNA was due to a general decrease in RBCs (30).…”

“…All reactions were performed as technical duplicates. For normalization, peptidylprolyl isomerase A-like ( ppial), which showed no changes over the infection time course series, was taken as reference (44). Results were analyzed using the ⌬⌬C t method.…”
