This article first provides an overview and brief history of relational dialectics theory (RDT) before turning to a presentation of RDT's basic tenets and theoretical utility. In addition, it also examines how RDT has been applied in studying family contexts and offers suggestions for future directions of RDT-based research. Relational dialectics theory (RDT) addresses the meaning-making process. As the word "dialectics" suggests, the theory's key premise is that the meaning of some phenomenon emerges in the moment through the interplay or struggle of competing possibilities of meaning. Early on, RDT referred to these opposing meaning possibilities as "contradictions" (Baxter & Montgomery, 1996), but the term "contradiction" can carry a pejorative meaning, in addition to the presumption that meaning-making is a binary between only two alternative meanings. We outline critical grief pedagogy as a Mad feminist response to the silencing of loss that often occurs in academic spaces. This pedagogical framework creates openings for students to "break open the bone" of their own and others' losses, particularly through community-engaged learning and research. Using collaborative autoethnography, in this essay we (a professor and her mentees) explore our experiences working with the Scraps of the Heart Project-a community-based research collective focused on empowering families following the loss of a baby-to understand student learning outcomes that were born from our engagement with critical grief pedagogy. Our collective narratives revealed that these learnings included: gaining compassionate communication skills, embracing and unpacking failure as a method of mourning, becoming empowered and empowering others to share their stories of loss, and building a community of Mad grievers. We put these learning outcomes into conversation with cultural discourses surrounding pedagogical and academic norms. Additionally, we offer insight into how loss and mourning can be invited into the classroom so that students learn to engage grief critically, meaningfully, and Madly-and to learn important communicative skills along the way.

Introduction: One in nine women experience endometriosis, a common gynaecological disease, yet time to diagnosis averages 7 years. People are sharing their endometriosis experiences online. This research’s aim was to expose and synthesise the collective themes of diagnostic experience. Method: A qualitative thematic analysis of publicly accessible online autobiographical accounts of women and their endometriosis diagnosis. Themes were coded within NVIVO and thematic maps and tables created. Eighty-nine original accounts were identified, 26 were excluded. Saturation point was 49. Results: Women communicated long, painful and emotional journeys to diagnosis. Forty women experienced endometriosis symptoms before the age of 20, 33 before 15 years. Despite repeated GP presentation, 36 women had never heard of endometriosis before diagnosis. Women highlighted the positive impact of ‘that one doctor’ who said the word ‘endometriosis’ who listened, believed, investigated and provided prompt referral to specialists. Diagnosis gave relief and answers to the long journey, provided women a sense of community, hope and personal visibility after feeling alone. While this common disease is undiagnosed women suffer. Conclusion: ‘That one doctor’ can transform a patient’s experience and create a positive diagnosis pathway towards endometriosis. The doctor patient alliance is vital for prompt diagnosis. Symptom dismissal with long diagnosis delays are having negative, physical and psychological consequences for women. Early detection, GP education and community awareness campaigns are imperative to reduce further delayed diagnosis and long-term negative impacts of undiagnosed endometriosis.
