Actinomyces naeslundii infection in an African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) with mandibular osteomyelitis and cellulitis

Abstract: Actinomyces naeslundii is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacillus commonly isolated from the oral mucosa of a variety of mammals, including human beings (Bergeron and Burne 2001). It is one of the first bacteria to inhabit the oral cavity of human beings after birth, and is an early coloniser of cleaned tooth surfaces that favours invasion by other bacteria (Bergeron and Burne 2001). Actinomyces species seem to be involved in caries and periodontal disease in human beings (Ximenez-Fyvie and others 2000, Bergeron a… Show more

“…[1][2][3] This species is prone to develop a wide range of oral lesions, some of which can manifest as oral masses, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic growths. 3,5,7 Non-neoplastic lesions that may manifest as masses include periodontal abscesses and gingival hyperplasia (GH). 3,5,7 Three retrospective studies have reported the frequency of oral lesions, among which, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the most common.…”

“…Thus, the finding of A denticolens in lymph node abscesses is likely to be an intrinsic infection and, unlike strangles, without danger to in‐contact animals. However, as with recently described actinomycosis cases (Kawamura and others 2005, Martínez and others 2005), the trigger of the infection remains elusive. There was no history of head injuries in the three cases, none of the horses had dental problems and none was crib‐biting or fed any particularly hard feedstuffs, which could lead to minor injuries of the gums by firm splinters.…”
