Aloe vera gel protects liver from oxidative stress-induced damage in experimental rat model

Abstract: Aloe vera is a semi-tropical plant of Liliaceae family which has a wide range of applications in traditional medicine. In the present study, we sought to investigate the heptaoprotective potential of Aloe vera gel as a diet supplement. To achieve this goal, we have designed in vitro and in vivo experimental models of chemical-induced liver damage using male Sprague-Dawley rat. In the in vitro model, its effect was evaluated on Fenton's reaction-induced liver lipid peroxidation. Co-incubation with gel significa… Show more

“…[54] Dried A. vera gel powder reduces body fat mass in diet-induced obesity rats, [55] while its gel protects the liver from oxidative stress-induced damage in experimental rat model. [56] A. vera gel powder is used for colour stability during storage of different packaging materials because of its high shelf-life. [57] For long storage, apple slices are coated with A. vera gel.…”

“…Many biological and medicinal properties of Aloe vera are associated with inner gel of the leaves. Several studies have focused on antioxidant effect of Aloe vera (Haritha et al, 2014;Mohamed, 2011;Nahar et al, 2013;Ramachandraiahgari et al, 2012;Trivedi et al, 2015). However, one study showed Aloe vera juice induced oxidative stress and significantly decreased antioxidant enzymes levels (Cock and Sirdaarta, 2011).…”
