ArabidopsisCBF1 and CBF3 have a different function than CBF2 in cold acclimation and define different gene classes in the CBF regulon

Abstract: The C-repeat-binding factor (CBF)/dehydration-responsive element-binding factor (DREB1) proteins constitute a small family of Arabidopsis transcriptional activators (CBF1/DREB1B, CBF2/ DREB1C, and CBF3/DREB1A) that play a prominent role in cold acclimation. A fundamental question about these factors that remains to be answered is whether they are functionally equivalent. Recently, we reported that CBF2 negatively regulates CBF1 and CBF3 expression, and that CBFs are subjected to different temporal regulation d… Show more

“…They are in the Ws background. CBF loss-of-function lines were obtained from Julio Salinas and have been described previously (Novillo et al, 2007;Col background). dog1-2 (Col; Bentsink et al, 2006) and rdo4 mutants (Ler) were a gift from Marten Koornneef and Wim Soppe, and the gai-t6 rga-t2 rgl2-1 rgl1-1 quadruple DELLA loss-of-function lines were obtained from Nicholas Harberd (Ler background; Achard et al, 2006).…”

“…The gene encoding C-REPEAT/DRE BINDING FACTOR 1 (CBF1), a regulator of the cold acclimation response (28), and its target genes COLD-REGULATED 47 (COR47) and LOW-TEMPERATURE-INDUCED 78 (LTI78) (29), were up-regulated in the hybrids and most hybrid mimic lines but down-regulated or Table S3). Red/ green represents up-/down-regulated genes in the F1 hybrids.…”

“…Novillo et al (2007) reported that CBF1 and CBF3 function additively in cold acclimation and differently from CBF2; CBF2 defines different gene classes in the CBF regulon. Doherty et al (2009) showed that members of calmodulin binding proteins of the CAMTA family of transcription factors can bind to one of the cis-elements in the CBF2 promoter in vitro and are important for freezing tolerance.…”
