Blastocaulon (Eriocaulaceae), a synonym of Paepalanthus: Morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract: Generic circumscription in Eriocaulaceae has been based primarily on one to few floral characters and phylogenetic relationships within the family have only recently been explored in detail. Here, we present a morphological and phylogenetic study of Blastocaulon and Paepalanthus ser. Leptocephali, based on individual and combined datasets of the psbA‐trnH plastid region and nuclear ITS. All results rejected the monophyly of Blastocaulon. Based on results and previous analyses, we propose the synonymization of … Show more

“…Although slightly different from previous phylogenetic analyses, our results are strongly supported and consistent with morphology and with part of the historical classifications. The previous changes in nomenclature proposed for solving issues of Blastocaulon , Syngonanthus and Philodice are further supported (Giulietti et al ., ; Andrade et al ., ). The segregation of Comanthera from Syngonanthus (Parra et al ., ) is also supported, but not required.…”

“…Eriocaulaceae comprise c . 1200 species and 11 genera distributed throughout the tropics (Giulietti & Hensold, ; Stützel, ; Sano, ; Parra et al ., ; Andrade et al ., ). The family is historically divided into two subfamilies: Paepalanthoideae and Eriocauloideae (Koernicke, ; Ruhland, ).…”

“…The family includes 11 genera and c . 1110 species (Sano, 2004; Parra et al ., 2010; Andrade et al ., 2011) and belongs to Poales (APG, 2009). The distribution is pantropical, because of the broad distribution of Eriocaulon L., but two main centres of diversity are recognized in the Neotropics: the Brazilian Espinhaço Range (where 35% of the entire family diversity occurs) and the Guyanan, Venezuelan and Brazilian tepuis (Giulietti & Hensold, 1990; Stützel, 1998; Costa, Trovó & Sano, 2008).…”

“…Paepalanthoideae comprises Rondonanthus, Paepalanthus, Syngonanthus, Comanthera, Leiothrix, Lachnocaulon, Tonina, and Actinocephalus, and is characterized by presenting isostemonous staminate flowers and nectariferous style branches in the pistillate flowers (Ruhland 1903;Herzog 1931;Sano 2004;Parra et al 2010;Andrade et al 2011;Giulietti et al 2012). Eriocauloideae comprises Eriocaulon and Mesanthemum, and its representatives have diplostemonous staminate flowers and petals with glands in both staminate and pistillate flowers (Ruhland 1903;Giulietti et al 2012).…”
