(I Can’t Get No) Saturation: A simulation and guidelines for sample sizes in qualitative research

Abstract: I explore the sample size in qualitative research that is required to reach theoretical saturation. I conceptualize a population as consisting of sub-populations that contain different types of information sources that hold a number of codes. Theoretical saturation is reached after all the codes in the population have been observed once in the sample. I delineate three different scenarios to sample information sources: “random chance,” which is based on probability sampling, “minimal information,” which yields… Show more

“…Potential themes were refined and defined to explain the true meaning of the theme within the overarching research questions (Braun & Clarke, 2006). It was determined that data saturation had been reached when no additional codes emerged, or themes generated after an additional four interviews were analysed (Boddy, 2016;Guest et al, 2006;van Rijnsoever, 2017).…”

“…However, the approach chosen, including the use of an online questionnaire, will extend the study's reach to patients from in‐ and outpatient clinics and patient organizations. The three studies’ sample sizes are based on similar studies in rare diseases and qualitative research (van Rijnsoever, ). Nevertheless, the results’ country‐wide generalizability will be limited, as they will be drawn only from German‐ and French‐speaking Swiss SSc patients.…”

“…reasons for technology use and non‐use). In qualitative research, this sample size is usually adequate to reach saturation, that is, the point in data collection and analysis when new information produces little or no change to the codebook (van Rijnsoever, ; Sandelowski, ). Maximum variation in the patient sample enables the integration of those with diverse experiences due to socio‐demographic characteristics (e.g.…”

“…The interviews took place in the second half of 2015. They were recorded and subsequently transcribed verbatim with the participants' consent, having been carried out until theoretical saturation had been reached, i.e., when the reports obtained were consistent enough to unveil the phenomenon under study (15) .…”
