ChionochloaZotov (Gramineae) in New Zealand

Abstract: The Australasian genus Chionochloa Zotov is revised for New Zealand; all 22 species are endemic including the one species on the subantarctic islands. One new species, ten new subspecies, one new variety, and one new form are described; C. pungens of Stewart L is submerged in C. crassiuscula; C. Xelata is given the status of a hybrid. Natural hybrids are reported, and 35 interspecifir combinations ate described.

“…Austrodanthonia mera, A. clavata, A. racemosa and A. penicillata belong to the group of lowland species in which lemma indumentum is absent or reduced and an association among some or all of these species has been noted repeatedly (e.g. Vickery, 1956;Zotov, 1963;Connor, 1991;Linder, 2004). Joycea pallida and J. lepidopoda make up two of the three species of the genus Joycea and their association on molecular grounds is reassuring rather than surprising.…”

“…1). The pre-European condition of this area was native tussock grasslands (Connor 1991) on rolling topography underlain by Otago schist. Beginning c. 150 years ago, extensive grazing of the grasslands by sheep occurred and later cattle were introduced (O 'Connor 1982).…”

“…The possibility of inbreeding depression (see above) suggests that the species are normally outcrossing (Schemske & Lande 1985). Also, natural hybrids between a number of Chionochloa species are found in the field (Connor 1991). Finally, indications that pollination is reduced in C. pallens at lower flowering densities (Kelly & Sullivan 1997) suggest that not all pollination comes from pollen on the same inflorescence.…”

“…Chionochloa (Poaceae) is a genus of 22 species of large tussock grasses which dominate much of the subalpine zone in the South Island of New Zealand (Connor 1991). The species are wind pollinated and also vary widely in their flowering effort from year to year, i.e., are mast seeding (Connor 1991;Kelly et al 1992).…”
