Chlamydia trachomatisandMycoplasma genitaliumPlasma Antibodies in Relation to Epithelial Ovarian Tumors

Abstract: Objective. To assess associations of Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium antibodies with epithelial ovarian tumors. Methods. Plasma samples from 291 women, undergoing surgery due to suspected ovarian pathology, were analyzed with respect to C. trachomatis IgG and IgA, chlamydial Heat Shock Protein 60-1 (cHSP60-1) IgG and M. genitalium IgG antibodies. Women with borderline tumors (n = 12), ovarian carcinoma (n = 45), or other pelvic malignancies (n = 11) were matched to four healthy controls each. R… Show more

“…trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium ( M . genitalium ), have been associated with a higher risk for ovarian cancer [22,23]. These pathogens cause chronic and asymptomatic infection, increasing the risk of neoplastic transformation of the OSE.…”

“…Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium are sexually transmitted microorganisms associated with pelvic inflammatory disease. The presence of chlamydial HSP60-1 IgG antibodies is associated with high-grade ovarian epithelial carcinoma, while the presence of M. genitalium IgG antibodies is associated with borderline ovarian tumors (66). One casecontrol study including 50 patients with ovarian cancer and 30 control subjects with non-malignant ovarian lesions showed that human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 infection was significantly higher in cancer tissues than in the non-malignant tissues of the control group (67).…”

“…Indeed, there may be an association between upper-genital tract infections (in particular Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium) and epithelial ovarian tumours [42]. Taken together, the chronic inflammatory theory may be reinterpreted with the blame placed on the fallopian tube; the protective roles of tubal ligature or hysterectomy with salpingectomy could be explained by the absence of retrograde flow of inflammatory mediators.…”
