Chryseobacterium indologenesperitonitis in a peritoneal dialysis patient

Abstract: Peritonitis remains an important complication of peritoneal dialysis. The Gram-negative bacillus Chryseobacterium indologenes causes infection mostly in immunocompromised patients with severe underlying disease, mainly in Asia. Herein, we report the first case in Europe and the second case in an immunocompetent patient of peritoneal dialysis-associated C. indologenes peritonitis. Our patient presented with abdominal pain and a cloudy effluent and was started on intraperitoneal antibiotics. The organism culture… Show more

“…Fluoroquinolones have been shown to be effective in inhibiting biofilm formation by downregulation of the quorum sensing system-regulated genes involved in biofilm formation [ 15 ]. Some cases reported relapse of PD-associated peritonitis caused by C. indologenes within a few weeks, indicating biofilm formation [ 9 , 12 ]. In the present case, empiric therapy was initiated by administration of cefazolin and ceftazidime.…”

“…There are some Chryseobacterium infection case reports from Turkey, too (6,7). CAPD-associated peritonitis caused by C. indologenes has been reported rarely in the literature till date (8)(9)(10)(11)(12). And this is the first case C. indologenes peritonitis reported in Turkey according to the source screening.…”
