Coulteria sousae (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae), a New Species from the Rio Balsas Depression, Mexico

Abstract: Abstract— A new species of the genus Coulteria from the seasonally dry forest of the Rio Balsas Depression, Mexico is described and illustrated. Coulteria sousae is morphologically most similar to Coulteria pringlei but differs from it by having smaller flowers (1 cm long), long stipitate fruit, leaflets that are glabrous and coriaceous at maturity, and an allopatric distribution. The conservation status of this species is suggested to be Endangered (EN), according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Show more

“…Una de las especies en la subfamilia Caesalpinioideae es nueva para la ciencia, Coulteria sousae Sotuyo & J.L. Contreras, sp nov. (Sotuyo et al 2022). Así mismo, se reporta por primera vez en la Depresión del Río Balsas a Calliandropsis nervosus (Hernández & Guinet 1990), y se amplía la distribución en su límite sur para Mimosa purpusii Brandegee (Grether et al 2006).…”

“…The Coulteria genus belongs to the subfamily Caesalpinideae and emerged from Caesalpinia sensu lato as a generic segregate. 5 There are currently 10 accepted species in the Coulteria genus: C cubensis , C glabra , C mollis , C platyloba , C pringlei , C pumila , C velutina , 6 C rosalindamedinae , 7 C delgadoana , 8 and C sousae . 9 Consequently, the presence of cassane-type diterpenes as the predominant class of compounds can be hypothesized according to the described phytochemical studies of the restructured genus Caesalpinia .…”
