In Panama City Beach, Florida, thirteen mosquito species have been recently registered into public health data banks over the span of 7 years [2014-2020], ten species within their published geographic range and three species outside of their noted geographic range. The underreporting is likely due to past identification practices of sub-sampling and aliquoting surveillance collections while only recording the top-most three abundant species for control application thresholds. However, these thirteen species have not been recorded in this area by public health operations up until their respective record timelines. Timelines of identification, species specific character states, the dynamic of identifying similar species and alternate identification methods are discussed. As of 2020, 10 genera and 50 species within Diptera: Culicidae are recorded in Panama City Beach, FL, U.S.A.

Se reporta por primera vez la presencia de Culex (Culex) coronator (Dyar & Knab) (Diptera: Culicidae) en las localidades de Vertientes (n=6) y Najasa (n=5), pertenecientes a la provincia Camagüey, Cuba. La especie se relaciona con importantes arbovirosis, como son la encefalitis equina venezolana, encefalitis de San Luis y es un potencial vector de la fiebre del Nilo occidental. Se requiere investigar a profundidad la localización y posterior control de los criaderos larvarios de esta especie de mosquito, lo que puede proveer un estimado de la densidad poblacional en la fase adulta y proporcionar información necesaria para eliminar las larvas de este mosquito en sus respectivos criaderos.

Size of Openings in Water-Holding Containers: Impact on Oviposition by Culex (Culex) Mosquitoes

To assess how a grate covering a catch basin impacts oviposition by Culex mosquitoes, a field study was conducted in south Florida using containers with two types of covers, with openings of equal area, but different configurations. One opening mimicked a catch basin grate with 16 small openings, while the other cover had just one large opening. The number and presence of egg rafts in six of each container and cover combination was recorded over 18 nights at two field sites, consisting of a wastewater management facility area and residential subdivision. Three mosquito species, all belonging to the subgenus Culex accounted for more than 99% of total egg rafts collected: Culex nigripalpus (n = 1766), Culex quinquefasciatus (n = 754) and Culex coronator (n = 526). Approximately 90% of Cx. nigripalpus and Cx. coronator egg rafts were deposited in the containers with the large opening cover; whereas more Cx. quinquefasciatus egg rafts were laid in the containers with small opening covers than those of Culex nigripalpus and Culex coronator combined. Similar patterns of egg laying activity were noted at each sampling stations. These results suggest that for locating oviposition sites Culex quinquefasciatus may rely more on olfactory clues, while other Culex species depend more on visual clues.
