CYP2D6 Gene Polymorphisms and Predicted Phenotypes in Eight Indigenous Groups from Northwestern Mexico

Abstract: Our data show a lower frequency of CYP2D6 inactive alleles and a higher frequency of duplication/multiplication of CYP2D6 active alleles in indigenous populations that in Mestizos. Original submitted 14 August 2013; Revision submitted 7 October 2013.

“…The absence of PMs in the present population of MLs was similar to those found in most previous Mexican-Amerindian populations [9][10][11]19]. There is only an exception in a group of Tarahumaras that also reported a very low frequency of 1.4% [11].…”

“…β 1 AR selective antagonists should thereby be preferred in patients with diabetes and heart failure [ 49 ]. The variability in the response to β-blockers has been at least in part attributed to polymorphisms in CYP2D6 gene, which is highly polymorphic in humans [ 105 ]. Indeed, many β-blockers are partially or totally metabolized by CYP2D6, and opportune dose modifi cations should be accurately considered in patients treated with drugs processed by the same CYP isoforms, including antipsychotics and antidepressants [ 106 ].…”

“…For example, Contreras et al listed 14 new polymorphisms representing 18% of variations on CYP2D6 in Mestizos and native populations from Mexico, including a conversion to CYP2D7 labeled as polymorph*85 apparently unique to some individuals from Guerrero, Mexico (Contreras et al, 2011). Moreover, except for the Tarahumara people, Mexican native populations bear genetic variants that reflect an extensive and ultrarapid CYP2D6 metabolism in a higher proportion (12.6%) than Mexican Mestizos, probably due to duplication of CYP2D6 active alleles (Lazalde-Ramos et al, 2014).…”
