“…Condom use was low among students with new casual sex partners, consistent with prior research on international students [ 33 , 34 ]. Possible reasons for this include unplanned sexual activity, alcohol consumption, preference for condomless sex, stigma associated with condom use [ 34 ] and low perceived risk of sexually transmitted infections [ 8 ].…”

“…Therefore, with active engagement and education, peers can play a critical role in increasing HPV vaccine uptake if they are knowledgeable and they themselves have experienced vaccination. Some of our participants had a low perceived risk and susceptibility to HPV infection, which appears to be a common finding for people who are not sexually active (35). The asymptomatic nature of early HPV infection and marketing of the vaccine as a prevention for sexually transmitted disease in contrast with other childhood vaccines could contribute to this perception.…”

“…Given the age of college students and the availability of health centers or clinics on campus, most universities and colleges are ideal locations for HPV campaigns [ 8 ]. Yet, studies have shown that improving HPV knowledge and HPV vaccination uptake can be difficult in the college student population [ 9 12 ]. Thompson et al, found that among a total of 548 college students between the years of 2008–2015, HPV knowledge improved but misperceptions about HPV-related outcomes persisted [ 13 ].…”
