DrosophilaSERTAD domain protein Taranis is required in somatic cells for maintenance of male germline stem cells

Abstract: Background Polycomb proteins are essential for maintaining stem cell identity across different stem cell niches. However, how they function to maintain stem cell niches is not fully understood. Results Here we show that the SERTAD protein Taranis (Tara), which is a Polycomb‐trithorax group protein, is expressed in the adult testis niche and plays a role in its maintenance in Drosophila. We found that tara is expressed in early cyst cells, likely including somatic cyst stem cells (CySCs) of Drosophila male test… Show more

“…In mammalian systems, constitutive DNA methylation has been shown to be essential for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) selfrenewal 56 ; chromatin modification by Polycomb group proteins (PcGs) is required for maintaining embryonic and adult stem cells via gene repression and delayed differentiation. 34,57 Consistent with the idea that heterochromatin dynamics is important for stem cell maintenance, studies have shown that when mammalian embryonic stem cells are induced to differentiate in vitro, the pattern of H3K9me3 and HP1 localization go through dynamic changes at each step of differentiation. 58 In planarians, an HP1 protein is induced upon injury and functions specifically to promote the regenerative proliferation of adult stem cells.…”
