DSM-IV ADHD Symptoms Self-Ratings by Adolescents

Abstract: These findings extend existing gender invariance data for the ADHD symptoms. The theoretical and clinical implications of the findings as well as the revision implications for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-V) are discussed.

“…The α level for testing nested models with the scaled chi-square difference (Bryant & Satorra, 2012) was set at .01 (e.g., Dekovic, et al, 2006;Ferrando, 2000;Gomez, 2013) for Type I error control (Green & Babyak, 1997).…”

“…In particular, the significant amount of IGD research across different disciplines (i.e., clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, sociology, and human-computer interaction), along with the global use of IGDS9-SF for clinical purposes, make the evaluation of its cross-cultural psychometric properties imperative (Petry et al, 2014;Pontes and Griffiths, 2015). A worldwide-used measure should demonstrate equivalence of underlying psychometric and scaling properties to be efficiently used across cultures (Gomez, 2013;Gomez and Rohner, 2011). Measurement invariance (MI) refers to groups (i.e., cultures, countries) reporting the same observed scores when they exhibit the same level of the underlying trait (Gomez, 2013;Gomez and Rohner, 2011).…”

Measurement invariance (MI) refers to groups (i.e., cultures, countries) reporting the same observed scores when they exhibit the same level of the underlying trait (Gomez, 2013;Gomez and Rohner, 2011). If there is no support for the MI of an instrument across the groups being studied, then the results of such comparisons are confounded by differences in measurement and scaling properties.…”

“…Measurement invariance has been a topic of interest in clinical ADHD studies; however, most of those studies explored the underlying construct of ADHD across various subgroups defined by demographics, for example, based on gender, age, or different raters ( Gomez, 2013 , 2016 ; Makransky and Bilenberg, 2014 ; Narad et al, 2015 ; Zeeuw et al, 2015 ; Caci et al, 2016 ; Morin et al, 2016 ). In general, these studies demonstrated that ADHD is largely measurement invariant across gender, age, and raters.…”
