Fodinomyces uranophilusgen. nov. sp. nov. andConiochaeta fodinicolasp. nov., two uranium mine-inhabiting Ascomycota fungi from northern Australia

Abstract: Seven acidophilic/acidotolerant fungal strains were characterized from samples of process waters (raffinate) at one of Australia's largest uranium mines, the Ranger Mine in Northern Territory. They were isolated from raffinate, which typically were very acidic (pH 1.7-1.8) and contained high concentrations of total dissolved/colloidal salts (> 100 g/L). Five of the isolates correspond to two new acidotolerant Ascomycota fungi. The first is a member of a new genus, here described as Fodinomyces (Teratosphaeriac… Show more

“…Strains isolated from RAC were only isolated at a pH 2.2 when metals were added to culture medium. This result shows concordance with those obtained by V azquez-Campos et al [48] whose isolates were obtained at low pH (1.7-1.8) and high metal concentration. Portuguese isolates proved to have extremely high tolerance to Cu 2þ , being able to tolerate up to 24.8 g L À1 (Dr. Gadanho pers.…”

“…MSD 302 and 270 strains, 99% similarity in D1/D2 region) and at Ranger Uranium Mine, Australia. These strains were isolated from the most extreme conditions in all Portuguese, Australian, and Argentinean acidic aquatic environments ( [41,48] and the present work). Strains isolated from RAC were only isolated at a pH 2.2 when metals were added to culture medium.…”

“…Coniochaeta hoffmannii belonged to acidophile yeasts in acid rock drainage of Iberian Pyrite Belt (Gadanho, Libkind, & Sampaio, ). Coniochaeta fodinicola occurs in the most extremely acidic aquatic environments, with pH as low as 1.7–1.8 (Russo et al., ; Vazquez‐Campos, Kinsela, Waite, Collins, & Neilan, ). Lecanora conizaeoides colonizes substrates with pH < 4 (LaGreca & Stutzman, ).…”

“…However, it is now known that they have a significant presence in locations not usually regarded as prime fungal habitats, e.g. acid mine drainage, deep aquatic sediments, hydrothermal vents and the igneous oceanic crust (Reitner et al 2006; Gorbushina 2007; Vázquez-Campos et al 2014; Iversson et al 2016). In such locations, fungi may exist in symbiosis with chemolithotrophic prokaryotes (Ivarsson et al 2016).…”
