Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) an edible mushroom; a comprehensive and critical review of its nutritional, cosmeceutical, mycochemical, pharmacological, clinical, and toxicological properties

Abstract: Reishi owes an exceptional value in nutritional, cosmeceutical, and medical treatments; however, none of the studies has provided its future-driven critical assessment. This study documents an up-to-date review (2015-2020, wherever applicable) and provide valuable insights (preclinical and clinical evidence-based) with comprehensive and critical assessments. “…The differences in the chemical constituent of AR and GL may provide some hint as to why AR exhibits superior protective effects on Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. A wide variety of constituents, including glycoproteins, polysaccharides, triterpenoids, meroterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, benzopyran derivatives, and benzoic acid derivatives, have been found in GL [ 36 ]. Among them, polysaccharides are the most abundant component in the water extract [ 37 ].…”

“…lucidum with nutritional and cosmeceutical value are already available in the market. 27 AOA and ABA of secondary metabolites of Pleurotus species have also been reported. 28 In vitro safety of ethanolic extracts derived from G. lucidum and P. ostreatus incorporated into base cosmetic creams was evaluated.…”

“…A new triterpenoid from G. lucidum , named Ganoderterpene A, was evidenced to protect microglia from apoptosis by restraining the inflammatory response [ 12 ]. In our study, GLTs were systemically administered, which is consistent with the clinical medication practices of traditional Chinese medicine [ 10 , 62 ]. The preemptive treatment with GLTs decreased the expressions of peripheral inflammatory factors, alleviating the inflammatory responses in MS mice.…”
