Haemoproteus jenniae (Haemoproteidae, Haemosporida) infects gulls (Larus spp.) in South Africa, with redescription of Haemoproteus skuae

Abstract: Haemoproteus spp. are dipteran-borne protozoa that infect erythrocytes and reticuloendothelial cells of birds. These parasites are not usually transmitted between birds belonging to different orders. The suborder Lari (order Charadriiformes) comprises c. 170 avian species, the majority of which are aquatic, including gulls, terns, auklets, murres, and skuas, among others. In spite of the diversity of this avian group, there is limited known diversity of haemosporidian parasites, with only four recorded Haemopr… Show more

“…Ralph Vanstreels and co-authors present a survey of infections in Laridae aquatic birds – a suborder with more than 170 species including gulls, skuas and puffins (Vanstreels et al ., 2023). Previous studies in this avian suborder revealed a low diversity of haemosporidian parasites, which could be explained by a limited sampling effort, or to their occupation of habitats with less abundant vectors.…”

“…of 23 March 2023, 20 haemosporidian lineages (8 Plasmodium, 10 Haemoproteus, and 2 Leucocytozoon) have been registered in wild larids including 3 lineages in wild injured individuals sampled in rescued centers(Bensch et al 2009;Capasso et al 2023;Vanstreels et al 2023). CIAE02 and LARCAC02 are the only Leucocytozoon lineages reported in this family so far.…”
