Hypericum perforatum Oil and Vitamin A Palmitate-Loaded Gelatin Nanofibers Cross-Linked by Tannic Acid as Wound Dressings

Aysen Akturk,
Funda Nur Kasikci,
Dilara Nur Dikmetas
et al.

Abstract: Recent studies in wound dressing applications offer new therapies to promote the wound healing process. The main strategy of this study is to combine the traditional perspective of using medicinal oils with polymeric scaffolds manufactured by an engineering approach to fabricate a potential tissue engineering product that provides both new tissue formation and wound healing. Thus, Hypericum perforatum oil (HPO) and vitamin A palmitate (VAP) incorporated gelatin (Gt) nanofibrous scaffolds were successfully prep… Show more

“…A large portfolio of bioactive compounds has been identified in the composition of HYP, including phloroglucinol derivatives (hyperforin, adhyperforin), naphthodianthrones (hypericin and pseudohypericin), and flavonoids (rutin, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, quercitrin, quercetin). ,,,, However, despite their promising biological activities, these compounds show low water solubility, inadequate bioavailability, and poor chemical stability under various environmental conditions like light, air, or heat, , which restrict their potential applications in value-added products. To overcome these drawbacks, and also to improve their biological activity, their encapsulation in different multifunctional systems, including lipid nanocapsules, thermoresponsive liposomes, poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) nanoparticles, or hydrogels, has been pursued.…”

“…In ancient times, HYP was not only thought to have healing properties but also magical powers . Traditional uses of HYP include a plethora of indications, both externally (wound healing and antiseptic uses) and internally (for digestive ailments such as diarrhea and gastric ulcer, or as a sedative in psychiatric disorders). …”
