In-situfabrication of gold nanoparticle functionalized probes for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy by dielectrophoresis

Abstract: Abstract. We report the use of dielectrophoresis to fabricate in-situ probes for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) based on Au nanoparticles. A typical conductive atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to functionalize iridium-coated conductive silicon probes with Au nanoparticles of 10-nm diameter. Suitable TERS probes can be rapidly produced (30 to 120 s) by applying a voltage of 10 Vpp at a frequency of 1 MHz. The technique has the advantage that the Au-based probes are ready for immediate use for TERS… Show more

“…To prevent or restrain the randomness of hot spot localization (unavoidable in metal films) and improve the manufacturing reproducibility of AFM‐TERS tips, selective decoration of tip apexes with Ag, Au, and Au–Ag core–shell NPs was performed by means of laser‐induced synthesis, dielectrophoresis, or applying the pick‐up process on dendron‐modified AFM tips followed by the growth of an Ag shell or Au spikes . Microfabrication methods (FIB milling, photolithography, …) also attracted much interest due to their ability to manufacture highly reproducible nanostructures with relatively high electromagnetic field enhancements.…”

“…This is something that has been a typical issue for TERS. 28,29 Attention has as a result shifted towards tips based around colloidal noble metal nanoparticles, [30][31][32] the synthesis of which falls within the domain of 'bottom-up' nano-engineering. The shape, size and composition of such particles can be readily controlled with high homogeneity and on a large scale, making them ideal for plasmonic applications.…”
